Granatkapelle chapel

Surrounded by the beautiful Zillertal Alps, the Granatkapelle Chapel is located at the sunny Penkenjoch plateau. The chapel’s architecture incorporates local timber, and the natural beauty of garnets, which have been mined in the nearby Stillup valley for centuries.

It is dedicated to Engelbert Kolland, a beatified local.

The Granatkapelle chapel, also called “Capella Granata”, was designed by Mario Botta, a Swiss architect from the canton of Ticino, renowned for his geometric and simplistic designs. The chapel’s interior features a mosaic portrait of Engelbert Kolland, made of 5 different local timbers and created by the local sculptor Markus Thurner. Across the room, there is an icon of Our Lady of Kazan.
