Summer program at Penken in Mayrhofen
The action mountain Penken holds numerous surprises and sports opportunities waiting to be discovered! Various hiking routes, whether from Tux, Mayrhofen, or Finkenberg, lead directly to the Granatalm. The 8-meter tall teddy bear Penken Pepi, the centerpiece of the newly built playground, is especially exciting for little mountaineers. He sits right across from our inviting sun terrace. There, in addition to hearty Tyrolean delicacies, you can enjoy comfortable lounge furniture and sun loungers inviting you to sunbathe.
Nothing beats the pure, fresh mountain air, which can also be inhaled on the numerous via ferratas on Actionberg!
Whether with or without electric assistance, the Penken is a true paradise for mountain bikers. The Finkenberger Alm lifts or the Penkenbahn lift quickly and safely transport you to the mountain, where numerous mountain bike routes for beginners and "pros" open up.
All adventure seekers can experience a special adrenaline kick when "floating through the air" – paragliding. Do not hesitate and rely on the years of experience of the pilots of Flugtaxi Mayrhofen. They will safely bring you back to solid ground.
Hiking at Penken
Explore the mountain world at Penken. All hiking trails around the Granatalm have one thing in common - namely, magnificent views of the imposing mountain world of the valley.
Hiking tips:
- Granatkapelle – only 5 minutes from Granatalm, idyllically situated by Herzsee, is the family-owned Granatkapelle – a must-visit!
- Moorlehrpfad – follow trail no. 22 b from the middle station of the Finkenberger Almbahn over meadows and swampy grounds to reach Granatalm in about 1.5 hours of hiking.
- Panoramarundwanderweg – from the mountain station of the Penkenbahn, follow the newly established Panoramarundwanderweg (panoramic circular hiking trail) with constantly changing views of the valley to reach Granatalm in about 1.5 hours of hiking.
Mountain biking
Riding is best at the top: the magnificent view, the crystal clear air, and the impressive experience of being above things and far away from everyday life.
With the comfortable Penkenbahn, guests glide from the center of Mayrhofen in just over eight minutes towards Penken to a height of 1790 m. Those who want to go even higher, can take one of the open mountain air gondolas of the Kombibahn Penken. Bikes can be conveniently transported in both cable cars.
Once at the top, a perfect biking area spreads around the Penken. No other mountain in the Zillertal is as well-developed and versatile as the Actionberg of Mayrhofen. A total of 21 mountain bike routes of all levels of difficulty are beckoning. The easy Penkenbahn I or Panorama Tour to the Penkenjoch, both starting from the mountain station of the Penkenbahn, are ideal for families.
Numerous challenging trails with varied route guidance await all action fans at an altitude of 2000 m. At Penken, everyone can find their individual tour, combine it with lift rides, and repeat or expand it as often as desired.
For all professionals, there are also countless route options from the Zillertal or Tuxertal directly to the Penkenjoch, something is offered for all levels of difficulty. For more information on the individual route options, click HERE.
The GRANATALM is also a fixed point in the annual Zillertal Bike Challenge. On the 3rd stage, the bikers pass the GRANATALM coming from Mayrhofen on their way to the finish line on the Hintertuxer Glacier.

Climbing at Knorren
The Knorren climbing area can be reached from Mayrhofen by the 3S Penkenbahn to the mountain station and further with the Kombibahn Penken.
From the mountain station of the Kombibahn Penken, walk on the gravel road towards Penkenjoch and turn right before the mountain station 6 SB Knorren.
Here begins the climbing area Knorren for beginners and advanced climbers. The climbing area is classified as an alpine climbing garden. You climb mainly on dolomite-like rock, which is mostly firm. A helmet is strongly recommended. Special children's routes have been set up and there is no shortage of hooks, making the climbing area very family-friendly.
From the Knorren climbing area, it's a 10-minute leisurely walk to the GRANATALM.
